Program Note
Commissioned by Toryo Junior High School Band (Hokkaido, Japan).
Standing alone in front of the great sea, "Voice of the Sea" can be heard. Wind blows across the surface of the water, waves are created, and the music endures with a soothing consonance. "Voice of the sea" is the product of the breath of the earth itself. Sounds born from human breath, that is, music of wind instruments, are not unlike being surrounded by the song of the Mother Sea.
A quest for light and dawn and the image of navigating a faraway strange sea is this work itself. The ocean is a road leading to all worlds, and the way that traveling in an unknown faraway sea seems to overlap with human destiny thriving with anxiety and optimism where possibilities are endless.
