The opera "Thaïs" was completed in 1893. The premiere was not so well received, and after several years a Massenet revision found greater favor. This is a love story where emotions sway between 'saintly' and 'secular' hopes of the monk Athanaël, who strongly wants to convert the courtesan Thaïs, who lives a life of abandon.
This arrangement consists of four main scenes. The final is the same as the end of the original opera, the reunion of Thaïs and Athanaël. Thaïs trying to ascend to heaven and Athanaël confessing his forbidden love are accompanied by the melody of "Méditation" and the sensual harmonies leading to the work's climax.
