Austrian composer, violinist and conductor Josef "Pepi" Hellmesberger, Jr. (1855 ? 1907) grew up in a well-known Viennese musical family that included his grandfather, father, uncle and brother. While his professional resume featured a professorship at the Vienna Conservatory and a post at the Vienna Court Opera, he reached the pinnacle of his career as principal conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1901 to 1903.

Because of his association with that orchestra, Hellmesberger's Danse Diabolique is often part of the program for their annual New Year's Celebration from Vienna telecast.
